Gwlan Teifi weavers use Dobcross ("Dobby") looms which are tolerant of the liveliness of newly spun, natural, untreated wools such as those produced for breeders by the small spinning mills in the UK. All the Gwlan Teifi weavers have extensive experience of these yarns. Contract weaving is for a minimum of 50 metres fabric in one length, on a common warp. Sections of the weft can be in different colours and a small variation in pattern may be possible. Organic processing, SoilAssociation registered, is available at Curlew Weavers. Cloth finishing (washing, raising, pressing etc) is now performed by a small number of specialist firms in Yorkshire and Scotland. Cloth from all over the UK, including Gwlan Teifi mills, is sent to these finishers. Organic finishing is available and is relevant to fabrics woven at Curlew Weavers. Contact Roger Poulson to discuss. 01239 851357 Fringes. For manufacturing throws, the weft can be interrupted by gaps which allow straight or purled fringes in the finishing process. In this case, the weaver cuts the returned cloth into sections and releases the fringes.
For most British fleeces a brushed blanket weight cloth is a popular choice. The end use should be discussed with the weaver beforehand as cloth intended for garments will require a closer weave. Visits to the weavers are an absolute must as individual advice is freely given and samples of interesting and original weave patterns, clothes and furnishings are available for consideration. |
